After Lycans purportedly killed her family, Selene was the only one left alive who had walked through the corridors of the fortress; however, she did not know that her family was slain by Viktor himself and believed Viktor had saved her from the Lycans. And the night her family murdered, Viktor made her as one of them, being a vampire. And that was the start that Selene became a death dealer and fighting against the race of werewolves or known as Lycans just for vengeance for the death of her family which is not true.
